Strawbraiding was important for hat and bonnet making in the 19th century but also provided women with an opportunity to make money for their families. We’ll talk about one Connecticut native, Mary Dixon Kies, the first woman to receive a patent in her own name, for her special strawbraiding technique. Then, we will try out a simple braiding activity.
